The main deity of Thiruvambadi Krishna Temple is Lord Krishna in his infant form. There is a mythical legend about the history of the temple. As per the legend, Thiruvambadi Krishna Temple was earlier located in Edakkalathur, 20 Km away from Thrissur town. In the Sixteenth Century, certain troubles arose at the place and devotees began to fear for the safety of the temple. Some of them decided to seek the help of a couple residing at Kandanathu Mana with the task of safeguarding the idol. The couple installed the idol within their house premises. The couple were childless and they began considering the idol of Krishna as their son. Lord Krishna was so impressed by their devotion and love that the idol changed itself to the form of infant Krishna with a flute in one hand and the other hand extended to receive the butter, the couple used to offer the idol daily. The couple were also ardent worshippers of Kodungallur Bhagavathy and used to go there everyday. But as the couple grew older, the travel became an arduous task for them. Seeing this, Bhagavathy accompanied them to their house. The Goddess was later set up on a pillar of the courtyard of the house. Later on, an idol of Bhagavathy was installed on the left side of the Krishna idol.
