History

Thrissur was also the point of contact for the Persian, Greeks, Romans, Portuguese, Assyrians, Dutch, Arab and the English.

The first mosque to be built in India is also located in Thrissur and is called the Cheraman Juma Masjid which was constructed around 629 CE. The initial structure was similar to Hindu temple architecture, but has evolved over the centuries. Thrissur is well-known for its famous temples as well, including the Vadakkunnathan temple, Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna temple and of course the most-venerated and much-visited Guruvayur temple.

Tourism

Thrissur witnesses the highest domestic tourist footfalls in Kerala and is famous for its stunning Athirappilly Waterfalls, Peechi dam, elephant sanctuary, trekking in the Western Ghats and of course the Vadakkunnathan and Guruvayur temples. This has led to a thriving hospitality industry here as well.
